DON’T CRY FOR ME – MY YESHIVA
Written and Performed by: Joe Fox
Back in 2009 – I travelled to Maine – where I made a documentary on a same-sex marriage referendum that was taking place in that state.
As a filmmaker – I was able to gain unprecedented access to both sides of each campaign. However – what I did not disclose to the anti-gay side was my sexuality.
And so at 48 – as a gay man who spent the better part of his adult life struggling to come out -– I was forced to go back “in.” Back into the closet once again.
And for three months – I tried to play it straight in the Lobster State. (No picnic: just sayin’!)
That in part is the story I tell (and sing) in my 90 minute show – “Don’t Cry For Me – My Yeshiva.”
The audience is taken by me – on a wild roller coaster ride told thru the eyes of a big NYC city Gay boy (that would be me) who suddenly finds himself in unfamiliar terrain and in lightning speed needs to adjust and suppress his identity (as well as his high alto-like laugh).
Just think Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) meets Eva Gabor (Green Acres). And that would be – yes that would be me!
Framed around our fight to marry the ones we love – comes the other part of my story: the story of an adopted son of an Orthodox Rabbi (again: me) and my lifelong search for family, love, acceptance and that elusive rainbow connection.
